Ohio College Grants For Single Mothers-Help For Single Mothers in Ohio

Ohio College Grants For Single Mothers-Help For Single Mothers in Ohio

The state of Ohio likes to think it has some of the most talented and gifted students in the country. Because of this, the Buckeye State put together grants to keep students in-state. They do so with need-based plans like these:

The key state program is called the Ohio College Opportunity Grant. In 2009, its the maximum was slightly over $1,000, but this amount could drop due to the Recession of 2008. Otherwise, the application process is very much like other grant programs. A student (or parent), must go online and fill a FASFA form, submit it and see how much Ohio is willing to award. While the grant can also be used to go to a college that's out-of-state, it can end up being much less.

Ohio does realize that you can't cover much with barely thousand dollars, so it created a number of other grants, again based on financial need. The key need-based supplemental grant is the Ohio Instructional Grant, which can add anywhere up $150 to $5,000 per academic year.

From there, the locally-generated grants become more specialized. For instance, if a student decides to go to a private college as opposed to an Ohio state/public university, the Student's Choice Grant will come into play, contributing as much as $900. In the case one is not pursuing a degree but a vocational certificate, the Workforce Development Grant can potentially cover the entire tuition.

The Buckeye State also recognizes that there are many situations where the student is a single parent or has to hold down a full time job, thus only being able to continue this or her education on a part time basis. The Part Time Student Instructional Grant is therefore available. It too can cover an entire tuition.

Then there is the War Orphans Scholarship. It is targeted to the children or dependents of military servicemen who were either killed or permanently disabled due to performing their duties. At the moment, the amount being awarded is again being decided upon, but in the past, it could go near a thousand dollars.

Similarly, there is the Safety Officer College Memorial Fund. This is for the children and dependents of policemen, firemen and related public servants who sacrificed their lives or became permanently injured while performing their duties. It is also available to the direct relations of those who served in the recent Iraqi conflict. Again, the amount being awarded is being adjusted. Also, if the student gets the War Orphans Scholarship, they can not get funds from the Memorial Fund.

Lastly, as a way to encourage more nurses, Ohio participates in two different grant programs. The first is the Nurses Education Assistance Loan Program. The other is the Past President Parley Nurse Program. The latter will give nursing students, particularly those who are armed services veterans or the children of vets, $300 to $750. The former is for RN's who decide to become nursing teachers. This fellowship is handed out in the form of a forgivable loan, and can range from $1,500 to $5,000 a year. In addition to the grants mentioned, a student should also browse the Internet for an online grant since there are many out there waiting to be applied for. Education Connection Online is a great site to visit for those looking to be matched with universities, colleges, programs and financial aid.
